Miramar

An off-shoot of the trail-blazing salsa band Bio Ritmo, Miramar revives the 1950’s & 60s Puerto Rican bolero tradition. In the Latin world, boleros are the ultimate expression of love and suffering and hold cross-generational and cross-national appeal. Miramar is led by Bio Ritmo’s pianist Marlysse Simmons and vocalist Rei Alvarez who sings duets with the eloquent Laura Ann Singh of Quatro Na Bossa and for this event they will be joined by a string section. The band pays particular attention to Puerto Rican boleros due to their roots on the Island, and their debut album on Barbés Records, is a tribute to Sylvia Rexach, the maverick composer and writer who was an emblematic figure of San Juan’s bohemian scene of the 40’s and 50’s. While her songs have become part of the Puerto Rican canon, they remain mostly unknown outside of her native island. Think after-hour shows in Old San Juan.
